Nursing Resume ATS Keywords: 80+ Terms by Specialty (2026)

Nursing Resume ATS Keywords by Specialty

Nursing resumes get treated differently by hospital ATSes than non-clinical resumes — not just because of the EHR/certification keywords, but because most large health systems (HCA, Kaiser, Cleveland Clinic, etc.) run keyword-matching ATSes on top of an HR system that scores against a fixed taxonomy. If your resume doesn't use the exact phrasing the system expects, you don't make it to a recruiter.

This is the keyword reference no other resume tool publishes at this depth. 80+ terms broken out by the major specialties, with the surrounding context that makes each keyword count.

If you're a nurse moving from one specialty to another, focus on the destination specialty's vocabulary, not your current one.

How nursing ATSes score differently

Three specifics for clinical roles:

1. Acuity and procedure terminology is the priority. Hospital ATSes weight terms like "Vasopressors," "Code Blue," "Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)," "Bedside Procedures" higher than generic words like "patient care." A 5-year ICU nurse with a resume saying "provided patient care" will rank below a new grad whose resume says "Vasopressor titration, Bedside ECMO management." 2. Certifications are the second priority. Active cert names (BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, TNCC) are weighted heavily. Lapsed certs hurt — list active dates. 3. EHR system experience is heavily searched. Epic, Cerner (now Oracle Health), Meditech, Allscripts. Whether the recruiter searches for "Epic" or "Oracle Health" or "Cerner" depends on the hospital's own EHR. List every system you've used.

EHR systems to list

Whatever system(s) you've used, list them by name:

  • Epic (also list Epic modules: Beacon, Stork, ASAP, OpTime, Anesthesia, Cupid)
  • Oracle Health (formerly Cerner)
  • Meditech
  • Allscripts
  • AthenaHealth
  • eClinicalWorks
  • NextGen
  • PointClickCare (LTC)

If you've used Epic specifically, list the modules. Hospital recruiters often search for "Epic Beacon" or "Epic Stork" specifically.

Universal nursing certifications worth listing

In addition to specialty-specific certs:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) — required, list expiration
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) — required for many roles
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) — for stroke-capable units
  • Active state RN license — list state(s) and number
  • Compact license (NLC) — if applicable
  • BSN / MSN / DNP — list degree

Red flags to avoid

A few things hospital recruiters explicitly watch for:

  1. "Provided care" vs specific procedures. Generic care language scores low.
  2. Lapsed certifications listed as current. Always include expiration dates.
  3. Inflating patient ratios. Saying you cared for 8 ICU patients per shift when normal is 2 reads as untrue.
  4. Mixing specialty terminology incorrectly. Calling med-surg "ICU" or pediatric "neonatal" gets caught immediately.
  5. Generic EHR mentions. "EHR experience" scores worse than "Epic, Cerner, Meditech."

Closing

Nursing keyword density is one of the few resume domains where being specific helps both the ATS and the human reviewer. Hospital recruiters are themselves often clinical or HR-clinical hybrid; they read for procedural specificity. The keyword list above isn't padding — every term reads as authentic to a clinician.

Tailor your resume to the specialty you're applying for, list every active cert, every EHR you've used, and you'll clear most hospital ATSes.
